Waiting

For as long as I can remember, I’ve been a big proponent of the theory that ‘life’s short, don’t wait to do what you want’.

It’s why I’ve never had a job for more than 2 years. Why I’ve got 3 degrees. Why I earn half of what I used to, happily. Because I refuse to settle for something that’s just ‘okay’.

Because life is too short to waste it doing something that doesn’t fulfill you. Too short to put off doing something that makes your heart sing.

Oh, inertia and entropy can certainly get in the way (inertia being a nice term for ‘laziness’) of the achievements and experiences that I want to enjoy. But I know that I have no-one to blame for that other than me, myself and I. No-one is stopping me from doing anything I want to do.

No-one’s stopping you, either. Are they?

So what are you waiting for?

What’s that dream, that goal, that thing you want to bring into being? If you’re on this blog, it might be a little creative business you’ve had brewing in your mind, or ticking along on the sidelines. It might just be an idea, or even a feeling…

I read a great article in the weekend paper about that blog post by Bonnie Ware – you know, the one about Regrets of the Dying.

In the article, she stated that were she to die tomorrow, she’d have no regrets, because working with people at the end of their lives has taught her what is worth living for, and she strives to live every day to the full, without regrets.

I think that’s amazing, and wow… how many of us could truly say the same? What would you regret? Would you regret not working 20 more years at a job you hate, to pay for a mortgage on a house you might not really need? I know I would if I chose to do that.

Instead, I choose to live in 2 rooms in part of a converted shed with a 100 metre walk to a bathroom and a proper kitchen, because it makes me a billion times happier to live like this and do work that I love than it would to do a job I hate to own a fancy house. Some people might call that a ‘sacrifice’.

I call it freedom.

What choices do you have to make to live the life you really, really want? To chase your dreams? Maybe you just have to change how you spend one hour of your day, every day. Imagine if that’s all it took! Maybe it is!

I don’t know, because I don’t know what your dreams are, I only know mine.

But I do know, and believe, that we shouldn’t waste our time waiting for things we could have. We should go out and chase them down, catch them, and make them our friends. Find out their names. Add them to our list of life companions.

We should spend time with the people and things that we love.

So, what are you waiting for?
